Claire Edwin

Claire Edwin completed her medical degree at The University of Liverpool graduating with honours in 2016, having also completed an intercalated Master in Research with distinction. Claire commenced an academic foundation programme post with the University of Warwick working with the Warwick Clinical Trials Unit with the Trauma & Orthopaedic research team. During this time Claire worked on a feasibility study as a trial co-ordinator (Patella Instability Physiotherapy versus Surgery-PIPS). Claire also carried out a systematic review investigating the association between headache and low back pain which has since been published and presented internationally. A 4-month post in Public Health with Warwickshire County Council provided a brilliant insight into the management of community and population health.

Following foundation training, Claire took a year out of training to gain further clinical experience. Claire was selected to spend 3 months volunteering in Costa Rica as a project manager and expedition medic with the sustainable development charity, Raleigh International.

In 2019, Claire embarked upon 2 years of core surgical training in North West London rotating through plastic & burns surgery, general surgery, and intensive care medicine. Claire gained her membership of Royal College of Surgeons in February 2020. Claire was redeployed to COVID-19 medical wards in the first wave in 2020, and was working critical care throughout the second wave in 2021. During core training Claire gained experience in teaching including working as an anatomy demonstrator at Imperial College London, and Claire lead quality improvement projects which were presented nationally.

Inspired by the leadership challenges of her work in Costa Rica, as well as working as a junior doctor, Claire was appointed as a National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow 2021/22, working between NHS England and NHS Improvement’s EPRR team and the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management. Claire is a true believer in the value of authentic clinical leadership, to ensure that patient safety and experience is at the forefront of decision making. Recognising her interests in public health, and the desire to care for patients more holistically, Claire embarked on a new career direction after the fellowship, commencing GP training in the South West.
