What is The Big GP Consultation?

The Big GP Consultation is a platform for GP trainees and early career GPs to collectively discuss our vision for general practice, and how we can shape this future locally, regionally, and nationally.

Between February and May 2022, we hosted five 90-minute sessions with GP Trainees and early career GPs who have volunteered to take part in the programme. Each themed session involves a talk and Q&A from a renowned guest speaker, followed by breakout room discussions on sub-topics related to the session.

The insight shared and ideas generated during these consultations have been collated to form a co-produced vision for the future of general practice.

Roadmap for each Session

Pre-session

Participants are invited to fill in a pre-session survey, to collect qualitative and quantitative views on the session theme. Participants are also provided with pre-reading on the session theme.

Session Begins

7.30pm

Each session centres on one key theme in general practice – our role in the ICS, or how to effectively recruit and retain our workforce, for example. Participants are introduced to the concept.

Guest Speaker

7.45pm

Our renowned guest speaker shares their views on the evening’s theme. The audience then post their questions and challenge to the guest speaker.

Breakout Rooms

8.05pm

Participants join a self-selected, facilitated breakout rooms on one of four sub-topics, to engage in peer-to-peer discussion.

Plenary

8.45pm

The session finishes with a brief round-up of the discussions in each of the breakout rooms.

Post-session

Participants complete a post-session survey, to assess how their views have changed, as well as giving them the opportunity to contribute further to the discussion.

Next Steps

The Big GP Consultation team collates all of the insight gathered from the breakout room discussion, pre- and post-session surveys, to create a series of outputs. These outputs include infographics and written reports.

The sessions are just the start…

The insight gathered during these sessions is invaluable, and is just the start of the journey. The team, and the participants, are now engaging with national, regional, and local stakeholders to share their vision for the future of general practice, and look to impact the change that they want to see.
