Rob Cullum

Rob Cullum is a GP Trainee based in Grantham in the East Midlands. His clinical interests lie in LGBTQ+ Health and Mental Health with a particular interest in the role of primary care in managing patients with personality disorder. In 2021/22, he worked as a National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow at NHS England and NHS Improvement in the Midlands Regional Medical Workforce Team. In this role his work included support for international medical graduates, refugee doctors and the wellbeing of trainee doctors. He also worked to support Urgent and Emergency Care transformation in the region through changes to how 111 interacts with primary care and the virtual ward programme.

Rob was also, until recently, the Chair of his previous Trust’s LGBT+ Staff Network. In this position he undertook a significant restructuring of the Network. He was also a founding member of the newly formed Council of Staff Networks within the Trust which has been created to strengthen how the organisation listens to the voices of those from different backgrounds. He continues to be keen to ensure that under-represented voices are given a platform to be heard.

Rob graduated from the University of Nottingham Medical School in 2015. Following completion of his Foundation Programme in the Trent Foundation School, he undertook a 2-year Clinical Teaching Fellowship in General Surgery at United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, where he undertook an extensive review of how the third-year curriculum was delivered. During this time he studied for a Masters Degree in Medical Education, graduating with Distinction in 2020 and winning the Award for Highest Module-weighted Average Score. In his dissertation research he undertook a qualitative phenomenological study to explore the role secondary school science teachers have in supporting students from ‘widening participation’ backgrounds in applying to medical school.

Alongside his clinical work, he has had a number of positions of responsibility within the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME), most recently as the Secretary for the Trainee group for ASME (TASME). His interests in medical education are around Widening Participation, Mentoring in Personal Identity Development, and Diversity, with a particular focus on LGBTQ+ Medical Education. He is currently leading on the development of the TASME podcast which is due to launch in Summer 2022.

Outside of work, Rob lives in the East Midlands with his partner and their young English Setter. He enjoys cooking and baking as well as walking.
